We are gearing up for our first big road trip with the kids. And when I say big, I mean 971.41 miles big. Back in February, in the middle of the largest blizzard ever, it seemed like a really fun idea. Now? Well, my husband and I have lost some enthusiasm as we are only two days away from departure and have piles of snacks, beach gear, and car activities taking over our kitchen. And I would have to say he has almost lost all enthusiasm as the pointer finger to the temple sign has been done quite a few times while talking about our strategic approach to packing the car. We've got the movies, iPad (specially ordered for this trip), the Leapster (it is seeming to be all about the electronics). I do have some old school activities, like coloring books and stickers books.
And then I've got the caffeine covered in the way of Starbucks double shots (you never if you are going to be 100 miles out from a Bucks), 5hr Energy Drinks (the husband wants to try these, I would never for fear of instant heart attack and, again, being 100 miles away from a hospital), and a case of Gatorade...it will be a marathon after all. And then, I slipped in a few mommy/daddy juice boxes as our reward when we will get to the coast. I've never had wine out of 4 inch boxes before but I am pretty sure that this is occasion for it!

What a great photo of your fam...just kidding. Great idea. I always bring something to distract myself from my husband's driving like some great mags or a book but I think you have that covered....oh and a pee jar or cup....lol. They make mini wine boxes? That's too funny. I hope you guys have a great trip! Hopefully not too too many 'are we there yet' cries. Btw, we have that George beach game too and love it.

Yes- gotta have Double Shots.
And I must say, as much as I try each trip (and my kids do too) to pack 'old school stuff' in, it is the electronics that keep them happy, not fighting, not incessantly complaining, and us SANE.
When we have {stupidly} punished them and taken the electronics away, we're really just punishing ourselves.
One tip... audio books. We are big road-trippers and always have a good audio book to listen to. Last summer, it was The Help. We've listened to all of the Harry Potter Books on audio (years ago), The New Earth, even Eat, Pray, Love (Ryan's open to listening to whatever :).
They have earphones, so we can listen to our book without hearing their movies/games/etc.
Oh ... have a blast! Starbucks is the perfect weapon to ensuring that you survive :)

It sounds like you have your bases covered--I'm impressed! We haven't tried a long road trip since we went from 2 to 3 kids...can't wait to hear how it goes!

Ha, imagine a road trip with just Karen, Rachel and Nat--Rex had to work, so he flew out. Chicago to Philly. The only entertainment for a 2 year old and a 4 year old was a Fisher Price cassette player.. ummmmm
that was supposed to say karen said, not rex said...
karen, i guess we are pretty lucky with our arsenal of electronics!!! i did love that FB cassette player...but not for 10 hrs.....i'm sure that trip is a vivid memory :)
